“Circularity and Sustainability in Architecture” is the name of the Talk, which will be held on November 8, 2022 in The Yard, a multi-purpose outdoor space adjacent to the OMA-designed “Concrete”. It is located in the heart of Alserkal Avenue and serves as a home to open-air events on the avenue. The Talk will start at 4:30 PM and end at 6:00 PM.

Welcome address will be read by Vilma Jurkute, Executive Director in Alserkal Initiatives. Caroline Bos, Co-founder of UNStudio will be keynote speaker at this event.

Year 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the reciprocal relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Several events and talks were organised by the Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai. Throughout those years the Netherlands has been supporting Dubai in its development, creating in collaboration state of the art architecture. During the session in The Yard there will be a discussion about the main projects with a Dutch footprint in Dubai: Netherlands pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai; “Concrete” in Alserkal Avenue and Wasl Tower, which is now under construction. The main topic of this discussion will be the important role of sustainability with a focus on the design with the use of local materials and circularity.

It’s an important conclusion that in order to limit climate change and preserve the Earth’s resources, society needs a transition from a linear to a circular economy. One can view all existing materials as reusable raw material, which will be a perfect way of saving resources. This transition requires changes in our lifestyle, attitudes and how we design and build. New buildings, products and environments could be created to a greater degree by utilising existing buildings and urban areas. New construction should also be based on a circular approach from an early stage of the design process. This complex process requires deep knowledge and collaboration across many supply chains during the design and construction periods.

There will be a panel discussion after the speeches. Members of the panel are: Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-founder Emirates Green Building Council; Nico Mehlkop, Business Manager Royal Mosa; and Dima al Srouri, FounderBiospheric City Lab.
