On White is a solo exhibition by Palestinian artist Majd Abdel Hamid, on display at Grey Noise. Running through 4 June 2025, the show invites visitors to engage with the subtle complexities of Hamid’s work and reflect on themes of time, memory, and the physical negotiation of material.

The exhibition features a collection of Hamid’s ongoing white-on-white embroidery pieces, a meditative practice he has sustained for over a decade. These artworks, composed of white thread stitched onto white surfaces, are the result of long, deliberate labour. The subtle textures and shifting shadows they create call for close, contemplative attention.

Hamid treats embroidery as a form of thinking: a process that has evolved from chasing perfection to embracing fluidity and unravelling. The repetition inherent in his work is likened to the slow growth of a ghost garden, silent yet persistent. Each stitch bends time, stretching and collapsing it while resisting fixed meaning. Guided by instinct and improvisation, his compositions move through a language of abstraction that is at once fragile and resolute.

About the artist

Majd Abdel Hamid (b. 1988, Damascus) divides his time between Beirut and Paris. He studied at the International Academy of Art Palestine (Ramallah, 2007-2009) and graduated from the Malmö Art Academy (Sweden, 2010).

Hamid’s practice, which encompasses video, installation, drawing, and sculpture, is rooted in slow, repetitive gestures, particularly embroidery and cross-stitch. His work addresses themes of national identity, trauma, and resistance, offering a quiet but pointed counterpoint to the speed and saturation of digital imagery.

Hamid has showcased his art pieces in various exhibitions across the world, such as Resonances (solo) (Kunst Halle St. Gallen, Switzerland, 2025); Les voix des fleuves, Biennale de Lyon (Lyon, France, 2024); Muscle Memory (solo) (Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow, Scotland, UK); and Heartbreak (Ruya Maps, Venice, Italy, 2019), among others.

Hamid was a finalist for the Young Artist of the Year Award, presented by the A.M. Qattan Foundation, in 2008, 2010, and 2012. His works are held in esteemed international public collections, including Musée d’Art Moderne (Paris, France), S.M.A.K. (Ghent, Belgium), Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah), and Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Vaduz, Liechtenstein).
