Arabic Calligraphy Courses for Adults and Children

This month, both adults and children who would love to start learning Arabic Calligraphy have a great opportunity to do it: take part in the courses by Sharjah Art Foundation and the Cultural Foundation.

SAF offers a free beginner course on Arabic Calligraphy principles. Participants’ minimum age must be 15+. All materials are provided by the Foundation. The course will take place on Mondays to Thursdays, from September 19 until December 28, 2022. The classes will start at 10:00 AM and end at 12:00 PM. The other option is 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The course will be held at the following locations: Al Dhaid Art Centre, Al Madam Art Centre, Al Hamriyah Art Centre, Dibba Al Hisn Art Centre, Kalba Art Centre and Khorfakkan Art Centre.

Participants will get familiar with the Ruqqa script, which is quite simple and used for everyday writing. They will learn techniques and tools used in calligraphy, such as reed pens, inks, fused paper, etc. One will also be trained how to use these tools and make them ready for writing (how to sharpen reed pens, in particular).

The Cultural Foundation invites children (8–14 years old) to participate in its Arabic Calligraphy course. The classes will be held on 3, 10, 17, 24 November, 2022 (from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM) at Bait Al Khatt. The entry fee for four lessons is 200 AED.

The course will help young participants improve their handwriting. Being guided by curator Hajer AlKatheeri, they will learn the basic techniques not only of Ruqqa script lettering, but also Naskh script one. Naskh is easy to read and used in writing administrative documents and for transcribing books.
