Prolepsis is Iranian artist Sahand Hesamiyan’s solo show arranged by the Third Line Gallery that displays his engrossing sculptures made of steel. The exhibition marks the artist’s 24-year journey with this medium. Although Hesamiyan is famous for his monumental large-scale art pieces, they are not on view. The show features miniature forms of the projects which were not materialised. Each sculpture demonstrates what could have been, and the artist invites viewers to ponder the interplay between aspiration and realisation. One will be able to see Hesamiyan’s artworks until 3 November 2023.

In his work, Hesamiyan delves into the relationships between geometry, mythology, and philosophy and re-imagines traditional elements from these sciences for the modern era. He not only highlights the fundamental design and conceptual significance but also emphasises their crucial role in shaping the history of Islamic art.

The artist, who masterfully designs structural systems, merges the geometric principles of Islamic and Iranian architecture with minimalism in his practice. In particular, he reinterprets Yazdi-bandi and Rasmi-bandi in his creations (complex metal sculptures and artworks on paper). These are historic design techniques which were used in the interior ornamentation of domes in Persian architecture.
