The Resistance Monument Sharjah stands as one of the emirate’s notable landmarks. Managed by the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA), it is nestled in the coastal city of Khorfakkan, set against the scenic backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, and offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage and history.
Commissioned by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the structure is shaped like a warrior’s helmet. It commemorates the people of Khorfakkan who valiantly resisted the Portuguese Invasion in the 16th century. The city was attacked by six Portuguese ships in September 1507 as part of a strategic plan to gain control over trade routes along the coastal cities and countries. Despite their limited weaponry, Khorfakkan’s inhabitants heroically defended their city for two days until the invaders had to retreat into the sea.

The Resistance Monument features a lobby covering a total area of 898 m that is divided into two halls. The larger hall serves as a film screening room with a capacity for up to 40 people. Here, visitors are invited to watch Khorfakkan 1507, an award-winning full-length film that vividly portrays the epic battle, showcasing the bravery and resilience of Khorfakkan’s heroes.
The second hall is home to an exhibit of historical posters and artefacts, presenting the 14th-century tools used by the people of Khorfakkan in the battle. Additionally, last year, SMA and Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa) launched the Emirates’ pioneering Augmented Reality (AR) experience bringing the Resistance Monument’s story to life. Employing natural movement and 3D animation, the experience allows one to interact with the physical environment of the monument and its objects with remarkable precision.

Perched atop a hill, overlooking Khorfakkan Square, the Resistance Monument offers breathtaking views of the city below and the remnants of the Portuguese era, which are still visible throughout Khorfakkan. Visitors can enjoy the panoramic vista and reflect on the city’s history from a walkway around the memorial. The structure’s distinctive curved geometric design can also be spotted from various points across the city.
