The Tashkeel art centre proudly presents the latest edition of Made in Tashkeel, its yearly exhibit showcasing the talents of the centre’s creative community. The show features contributions from veteran Tashkeel members, new and past exhibitors, instructors, artists-in-residence, and workshop participants, reflecting the ongoing growth and success of Tashkeel’s efforts to support art development in the Emirates and the region. Taking place at FN Designs, the exhibition is curated by HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Tashkeel Founder and Director). It will be open to the public until the 27th of August, 2024.

This year, works by more than 100 artists and designers from the UAE, as well as other countries (Germany, Japan, Egypt, and India, to name a few), are on view. The pieces span different media, such as fine art, sculpture, jewellery, photography, digital art, and graphic design, and are created using a full range of materials: vegan silk, steel, sand, and AI, among others.

Visitors can have a look at Emirati artist Badr Abbas‘ cubist-inspired paintings that depict Dubai motifs and incorporate characters in traditional attire alongside urban elements like signposts and storefronts. Yemeni photographer Boushra Almutawakel is showcasing a collection of introspective photo self-portraits overlaid with red acrylic paints.

Meanwhile, Dubai-based interdisciplinary artist Mozhdeh Zandieh-Grayson‘s installation revolves around the concept of hope. This piece features a path of white pebbles leading to a mirror, behind which smaller black and silver stones suggest realised and faded aspirations. Another notable work on display is Burqa by Emirati artist Mohamed Al Astad who is famous for his unique technique, the Art of Beach Pearls (Danat Al Shawati). He buries tarps with metals along coastlines to imprint textures and colours over time and unearths them after that.

In the exhibition, there is also a wall dedicated to art that explores Palestinian identity, featuring works with embroidery motifs in abstract and figurative forms. Besides, there are prints, mixed media art pieces, and AI-generated images, including one created by Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum herself. It portrays a woman in traditional Palestinian clothing who is holding a watermelon.
