Zawyeh Gallery presents Bending Toward the Sun, the gallery’s first virtual exhibition, by Palestinian young artist Yazan Abu Salameh. It will be open to viewers until the 30th of July, 2022.
In this exhibition, Yazan Abu Salameh tries to navigate barriers to freedom by picturing large suns, using bold orange colours, overlooking structures of concrete which represent military occupation. The Bending Toward the Sun exhibition is a legitimate cry for justice. The artist also uses ink in order to create an effect of sections from the separation wall and other military structures.
Abu Salameh’s art pieces have been inspired by the novel Men in the Sun by Palestinian writer and political activist Ghassan Kanafani. The book focuses on three Palestinian refugees travelling from the refugee camps in Iraq, where they cannot find work, to Kuwait in hope of finding work as labourers in the oil boom.
Talking about virtual exhibitions, Ziad Anani, Zawyeh’s Director, said, “We are planning to organize virtual exhibitions throughout the year along with physical exhibitions in our branches in Dubai and Ramallah. We are looking forward to providing the audience with an amazing virtual experience as well as the opportunity to view the exhibitions from different parts of the world”.
Jerusalem-born visual artist, Yazan Abu Salamah studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima College in Bethlehem in 2011. He took part in a number of group exhibitions in Palestine, Jordan, and the UAE including Ramallah Art Fair (2020 & 2021), and Art Dubai (2021) as part of Zawyeh’s booth. His first solo exhibition was held at Dubai Zawyeh Gallery in 2021.
Zawyeh Gallery is an independent Visual Art Gallery founded in Ramallah, Palestine, in 2013. Since March 2020, the gallery has expanded by opening in a second location at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, UAE.
