Located in the Nad Al Sheba district of Dubai, Al Fanar Educational Facility by the EMKAAN studio presents a striking rethinking of what educational architecture can be in the contemporary Middle East. More than a conventional school campus, the project explores how architecture can actively shape emotional, intellectual, and social development. Through its sculptural forms, flowing spatial organisation, and deep engagement with nature and light, Al Fanar proposes a learning environment in which the building itself becomes part of the educational process.
The project was developed for Al Fanar School, an institution that embraces a holistic educational philosophy rooted in curiosity, creativity, and cultural awareness. Rather than following the rigid geometry and repetitive corridors typically associated with schools, EMKAAN designed a campus composed of interconnected domed structures arranged within a spiralling masterplan. The result is an environment that feels simultaneously futuristic and grounded in regional traditions.

The architectural concept draws inspiration from multiple symbolic and cultural references. One of the central influences is the koi fish, a symbol of perseverance and growth in Japanese culture. Seen from above, the campus unfolds in a fluid spiral reminiscent of the fish moving through water. At the same time, the rounded forms evoke the protective and nurturing qualities of a mother’s womb. They reinforce the idea of the school as a place of safety, imagination, and transformation. These metaphors are translated into architecture through soft curves, organic circulation paths, and enclosed courtyards.
The domed structures that define the campus also reference architectural traditions from the Islamic world, where arches and vaults have historically played both practical and symbolic roles. However, EMKAAN reinterprets these forms in a contemporary way. The white surfaces of the buildings enhance the ethereal character of the project while responding to harsh climatic conditions in Dubai by reflecting heat and intensifying the play of natural light across the campus.

Light itself is among the project’s most important architectural materials. Circular openings positioned at the tops of the domes allow sunlight to enter the interiors in carefully choreographed ways. As the day progresses, shifting patterns of light and shadow move across walls and floors, subtly connecting students to the rhythms of time and nature. According to principal architect Muhammad Obaid, this strategy was intended to encourage children to remain aware of the movement of the sun and their relationship to the wider universe.
Interestingly, the final form of the project emerged partly through adaptation and compromise. EMKAAN initially envisioned the school being constructed using the Cal-Earth technique, an earth-based building method that employs sandbags and natural materials. The idea was both environmentally conscious and educational: it would allow students to participate in creating their own learning environment. However, local fire regulations prevented the use of this construction system, so the architects had to rethink the project using reinforced concrete instead. The studio used this shift as an opportunity to develop the dramatic dome skylights and more complex geometries that eventually became defining elements of the design.

The project’s emphasis on fluidity and openness extends into its spatial organisation. Instead of separating functions into isolated blocks, the campus encourages interaction and movement through interconnected learning areas, gardens, pathways, and communal spaces. Pocket courtyards and shaded outdoor zones provide areas for play, reflection, and informal learning, while classrooms open into shared environments that foster collaboration and social engagement.
Nature also plays a significant role in the project. Landscape elements are integrated throughout the campus to strengthen the relationship between students and the environment. Gardens, planted courtyards, and outdoor learning areas blur the distinction between architecture and landscape. In collaboration with local ecological initiatives, the campus even incorporates educational farming spaces, which include vegetable gardens and areas for small animals, allowing children to engage directly with ecological systems and sustainability practices.

Despite its highly conceptual character, Al Fanar remains closely connected to the multicultural identity of Dubai itself. The project was designed to resonate with a broad spectrum of cultural backgrounds while maintaining a strong connection to Emirati heritage and Islamic traditions. EMKAAN combines references from regional architecture and organic forms inspired by nature to create an atmosphere of harmony and inclusivity. The resulting environment avoids the anonymity often associated with international school architecture and instead offers a distinctly local yet globally minded vision of education.
What ultimately distinguishes Al Fanar Educational Facility is its understanding of architecture as an active participant in learning rather than a neutral container for educational activities. Every design decision, from the curvature of the walls to the choreography of sunlight, contributes to shaping the sensory and emotional experience of students.
