Custot Gallery in Dubai welcomes visitors to see the new exhibition “Sun Is Coming Up”, held until 28 May 2022. It is a group exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and photography by the international contemporary artists Etel Adnan, Tony Cragg, Marc Quinn, Pablo Reinoso, Arnaud Rivieren, Tomás Saraceno, Sophia Vari, Bernar Venet and Fabienne Verdier.
Using various colours and textures, the exhibition traces the anthropological circadian rhythm of night and day. A quickened twenty-four-hour cycle, brought together by the natural display of the works, is presented in the gallery.
Presented by Lebanese-American artist Etel Adnan, a major ceramic “Staring at the Sun” is one of the show’s highlights. This work represents one of the foundational figures of Adnan’s life work: the sun. Signature natural elements such as mountains, oceans and skies can be found in the reminiscence of this landscape.
A prominent painting, Ascèse, by French artist Fabienne Verdier is exhibited. To make her art, Verdier stands in the middle of the canvas with a giant brush of her own invention, which is suspended from her studio ceiling while using her body as a compass. And, in a single continuous rotation, she sets the mark of the circle around herself into the space of her canvas.
A monumental and very impressive six-meter-high tree sculpture by Belgian sculptor Arnaud Rivieren is looking over the show. Artist focuses on repurposing scavenged material found in steelyards of the UAE, breathing new life into them through a lengthy transformation process, reforming them into art objects.
Founded by Stephane Custot, Custot Gallery Dubai was opened in the heart of Alserkal Avenue, the city’s hub for arts, in March 2016. The gallery showcases modern and contemporary artists such as Josef Albers, Chu Teh-Chun, Ian Davenport, Jean Dubuffet, etc.
