Dubai is set to redefine its cultural landscape with the upcoming Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA), an architectural masterpiece envisioned by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Developed by the Al-Futtaim Group with support from the leadership of Dubai, this museum will be the city’s first official art institution, designed to become a new global landmark for contemporary art and design.
Architectural Concept and Vision
Tadao Ando’s design is inspired by the two enduring symbols of Dubai’s heritage: the sea and the pearl. The museum rises directly from the waters of Dubai Creek, its monolithic, five-storey structure clad in smooth white concrete panels. The curving form of the building evokes the image of a floating vessel, gently twisting toward a glazed oculus that brings in natural light, mimicking the gentle glimmer of a pearl.
The façade is punctuated by distinctive triangular apertures that filter daylight into the interiors, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the museum. This architectural language is a hallmark of Ando, who is celebrated for masterfully blending concrete, geometry, and natural light to poetic effect.

Spaces and Features
The museum will feature adaptable exhibition galleries across the first two floors, dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary art from around the world. The upper levels will house a restaurant, café, VIP lounge, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city skyline and Dubai Creek. The building will also feature educational spaces, a library, and study rooms.
A central cylindrical void channels sunlight through the heart of the museum, guiding visitors along meandering, serene pathways without the need for overt barriers. The landscape design includes a procession of palm trees lining the approach. It extends the rhythmic visual language of the building into the surrounding environment.
Cultural Mission
Conceived as a beacon for art and a catalyst for creative exchange, DUMA’s programming will go far beyond exhibitions. The museum will host artist talks, panel discussions, educational programmes, and international art fairs. As an institution, it aims to foster dialogue, curiosity, and social transformation through the power of art, reflecting Dubai’s ambition to become a global capital of culture and innovation.

A New Legacy for Dubai
Al-Futtaim Group’s collaboration with Tadao Ando Architect & Associates signals Dubai’s intent to create an enduring architectural icon. DUMA will float above Dubai Creek, symbolising the city’s connection to water, heritage, and forward-looking creativity. The building promises to be as much an artwork as a cultural platform, poised to attract artists, thinkers, and visitors from around the world.
As Dubai continues to expand its influence on the global art map, the Dubai Museum of Art is destined to become the city’s signature institution: a place where tradition and innovation meet on the water’s edge.
