Today, the Picasso Gallery in Dubai opened Verses In Motion, a solo exhibition by acclaimed calligrapher and painter Behnam Moradi. On view is his newest collection of works that showcase his signature fusion of traditional Persian calligraphy with the fluid expressiveness of modern painting. The exhibition will welcome all visitors until 28 March 2025.

A recipient of the Mumtaz degree from the Iran Calligraphers Association in 2014, Moradi specialises in Naqashi-Khat, or “painted calligraphy.” This art movement, which emerged in the 2nd half of the 20th century, redefined the role of calligraphy, elevating it beyond its traditional function as a medium for Quranic verses and handwritten script. In Naqashi-Khat, letters are deconstructed, new materials replace conventional tools, and themes extend beyond the literary and cultural to embrace broader artistic expression.

Moradi’s work masterfully integrates two classical Persian scripts, Nasta’liq and Shekasteh Nasta’liq, with contemporary techniques, which results in captivating compositions rich in detail. Nasta’liq, developed in 15th-century Iran, is one of the most fluid and graceful styles of Arabic script traditionally used for Persian poetry and literature. In contrast, Shekasteh Nasta’liq, which emerged in the early 17th century, is a more cursive and spontaneous form designed for faster writing and often found in correspondence and informal texts.

Through his practice, Moradi examines the interplay of movement, space, and perspective, taking cues from nature’s rhythms and the contrast between light and shadow. His artworks feature multidimensional perspectives, employing diverse brush sizes and layered acrylics to create dynamic spatial effects. His artistic philosophy reflects nature’s cyclical patterns and the delicate balance of opposing forces. With Naqashi-Khat, Moradi continues to push the boundaries of Persian calligraphy and transform it into a contemporary, global visual language while paying homage to its rich heritage.
