This month, the region’s art scene is alive with a range of exhibitions spanning various genres, origins, and narratives. From immersive solo shows to explorations of cultural heritage, the current displays offer unique insights into regional and global perspectives. 1. Lines and Forms by Sumayyah Samaha
Leila Heller Gallery presents Lines and Forms, a solo exhibition by artist Sumayyah Samaha, celebrated for her vibrant use of colour and meticulous detail. Featuring abstract works characterised by spontaneity, the exhibition reflects Samaha’s exploration of line, form, and colour. The exhibition will be open to the public until 4 November 2024.
2. Hermès Heritage: In Motion
Until 9 November 2024, the National Museum of Qatar in Doha is hosting Hermès Heritage: In Motion, the final chapter in the Hermès Heritage touring exhibition series. The series explores the history of the Hermès house with its iconic themes, colours, and objects. In Motion showcases objects that evoke a desire to travel, explore, and wander, echoing the brand’s fascination with movement.
3. Summer’s Gone Exhibition
Custot Gallery Dubai presents Summer’s Gone, a group show that evokes a sense of seasonal nostalgia. On display are works by six acclaimed creatives: Lebanese artist Etel Adnan, French painter Fabienne Verdier, New York-based artist Landon Metz, Bolivian artist Kenia Almaraz Murillo, Belgian sculptor Arnaud Rivieren, and British artist Ian Davenport. The exhibition draws on shared memories of summer and will run through 9 November 2024.
4. In the Footsteps of Ara Güler: Exploring the Photographer’s Legacy
A tribute to renowned Armenian-Turkish photographer Ara Güler, this exhibition is organised by Qatar Museums in collaboration with the Ara Güler Museum (Turkey). One can see his iconic images showcasing his exceptional ability to capture Turkish cultural heritage. The show is on view at the Museum of Islamic Art until 9 November 2024.
5. Interwoven by Areej Rajab
Interwoven is Bahraini artist Areej Rajab’s solo exhibition currently on view at Mestaria Gallery in Dubai. The show delves into the relationship between human emotion and creativity, displaying captivating paintings that reveal the intricate beauty of patterns in nature and human behaviour. The exhibition will end on 10 November 2024.
6. Echoes of Sierra Leone
Echoes of Sierra Leone, presented by Urbanist Art Gallery, is a collective exhibition celebrating this country’s cultural vibrancy and artistic heritage. The show includes works by such artists as Hawa-Jane Bangura, Hickmatu Leigh, Julius Parker, Felix Rhodes, and Zahra Fakih Zato, highlighting themes of resilience and national pride. It will welcome all visitors until 22 November 2024.
7. Artist’s Rooms: Amba Sayal-Bennett
Until 24 November 2024, Jameel Arts Centre is showcasing British-Indian artist Amba Sayal-Bennett’s diverse creations. Part of Jameel Arts Centre’s initiative Artist’s Rooms, this exhibition features the artist’s works that span eight years, addressing architectural heritage and modernist aesthetics, as well as critically engaging with socio-political themes.
8. Artist’s Rooms: Augustine Paredes
Jameel Arts Centre is also displaying works by Filipino artist Augustine Paredes. His Artist’s Room draws on his migrant experience, exploring identity and familial connections. The exhibition, which will remain open until 24 November 2024, examines the impacts of colonialism through deeply personal stories.
9. Limited Edition Prints & Signed Posters
This collective exhibition organised by Total Arts includes works by internationally acclaimed artists like Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Joan Mitchell, alongside regional figures like Leyly Matine Daftary, Charles Hossein Zendehroudi, and S.H. Raza, among others. The last day of the exhibition will be 25 November 2024.
10. Emily Karaka: Ka Awatea, A New Dawn
Ka Awatea, A New Dawn is the first major exhibition by Emily Karaka, a Māori artist whose practice focuses on the cultural clash and colonial legacy in Aotearoa New Zealand. Hosted by the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) and running through 1 December 2024, the show presents pieces sampled from the artist’s 47-year career alongside new art pieces commissioned by SAF.
