The Theater of Digital Art (ToDA) in Dubai is hosting Van Gogh x Japan, a captivating educational exhibition celebrating the masterpieces of this renowned Dutch post-impressionist artist while exploring the profound influence of Japanese art on his work. Spanning 1,800 square metres, the show immerses visitors in a stunning visual experience through 360° projections that cover the walls and ceiling. The exhibition will run through 31 January 2025.

Japanese art — the Ukiyo-e style, in particular — played a pivotal role in shaping Vincent Van Gogh’s artistic vision. Ukiyo-e, meaning “pictures of the floating world,” was a popular art form in Japan during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries), characterised by woodblock prints and paintings. Its most common subjects included women, actors, landscapes, and folk tales. The influence of Ukiyo-e extended beyond Van Gogh to inspire other European post-impressionist artists, such as Van Gogh’s friend Émile Bernard, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin, among many others.
The Van Gogh x Japan exhibition brings together iconic works from both East and West, blending Van Gogh’s genius with Japan’s rich cultural heritage to offer visitors an enchanting experience.
