Until 25 November 2024, Total Arts in Dubai is home to the Limited Edition Prints & Signed Posters group show displaying works by prominent artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell, alongside several regional talents. The exhibition delves into the importance of limited edition prints as a medium that has enabled artists to experiment with different techniques and reach wider audiences.

With the origins of limited edition prints dating back to the 15th century, it was the invention of lithography in the 19th century that marked a pivotal development for modern printmaking. By the 20th century, printmaking advancements established limited edition prints as significant in the art world, allowing artists to develop conceptually rich works that were also marketable.

Visitors can have a look at works by acclaimed American artists such as Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Robert Motherwell. Mitchell’s prints are celebrated for their vibrant colours and expressive brushstrokes, embodying the emotional power found in her paintings. Rauschenberg innovatively merged photography, painting, and found imagery to create dynamic pieces that blended pop culture with abstract expressionism. Motherwell’s prints often explore existential themes with bold, contrasting shapes. Meanwhile, English artist David Hockney produced bright prints depicting landscapes and portraits with sharp detail and clarity.

The exhibition also showcases a collection of signed posters by iconic American artists Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol. In his prints, Johns used familiar symbols like flags, numbers, and targets, layered with deep meaning. Twombly, whose work often incorporates scribbles, calligraphic lines, and text, created prints characterised by gestural marks conveying raw emotion and poetic nuance. Warhol’s silkscreens of celebrities and consumer items like Campbell’s Soup cans remain some of the most recognised works of the 20th century. The displayed posters, more than promotional materials, carry personal dedications and reflect an emotional resonance beyond their artistic and historical significance.

Regional artists featured include Iranian painter and calligrapher Charles Hossein Zenderoudi, Iranian artist Leyly Matine Daftary, and Indian painter S.H. Raza. Zenderoudi’s prints are notable for their bold, rhythmic patterns that bridge cultural heritage with modern artistry. Daftary is best known for her minimalist yet emotive flat paintings, while Raza’s colourful prints reflect geometric abstraction inspired by Indian spirituality and symbolism, often depicting the Bindu circle, a symbol of the origin and essence of life.
