Life in the Fast Lane is a solo exhibition by American artist Tyrrell Winston, currently on display at Volery Gallery in Dubai. The show features a selection of Winston’s latest paintings and two of his iconic installations. Blending art, sports culture, and personal storytelling, the exhibition will be open to the public until 12 December 2024.
Winston is known for transforming discarded objects like deflated basketballs, cigarette butts, and worn basketball nets into intriguing artworks. His pieces challenge viewers to reimagine the significance of everyday items, serving as a blend of public service, exploration, and fascination with the lasting energy left behind in these mundane artifacts of human life. Winston’s practice also focuses on the juxtaposition of contrasting objects and their narratives, examining themes such as hope and despair, renewal and decay, and vitality and recklessness.

In Life in the Fast Lane, Winston draws parallels between the lives of athletes and artists, focusing on themes of speed, sacrifice, and perseverance. His paintings highlight the repetitive nature of success and the hidden costs of achieving greatness.
About the artist
Tyrrell Winston (b.1985, Orange County, CA, USA), who resides in Detroit (MI, USA), graduated from Wagner College in New York (NY) in 2008. Ten years later, he took part in the residency programme at the Macedonia Institute (Hudson Valley, NY).
The artist is particularly recognised for his basketball wall sculptures, which examine the idea of embedded history and how the past of an object becomes abstracted over time. Each basketball in this series is a found object, manipulated into sculptural forms and arranged in precise, predetermined compositions.

Winston has displayed his artworks in exhibitions across the globe, including New Religion, True Religion, Bigger than the Pope (solo) (Allouche Benias, Athens, Greece, 2023); A Tiger’s Stripes (solo) (Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 2022); Stockholm Sessions (Carl Kostyál, Stockholm, Sweden, 2021); The World Is Filled… (solo) (Hidari Zingaro, Tokyo, Japan, 2019); and Art Brussels (Stems Gallery, Brussels, Belgium, 2018), to name a few. Winston’s works are part of public and private collections, such as Vanhaerents Art Collection (Brussels), Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills, MI), and Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, OH).

The artist has collaborated with global brands such as Adidas, Puma, New Era, ’47 Brand, Mitchell & Ness, and the NBA, blending his artistic vision with sports and fashion through exclusive collections.
