Until the 5th of August, 2024, one will be able to attend 100/100 HUNDRED BEST ARABIC POSTERS (HBPA), an exhibition which is being held at the M7 art centre in Msheireb Downtown Doha. Part of the Design Doha event launched in February, the show is organised by the 100/100 HUNDRED BEST ARABIC POSTERS independent platform. Celebrating Arabic graphic design, this platform documents the present-day visual culture of the Arab world and aims to enhance the global visibility and perception of the region’s graphic design.
Conceived by a group of academics and students from the German University in Cairo (Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts), the HBPA initiative centres around the biennial HUNDRED BEST ARABIC POSTERS competition, where an independent jury chooses the top 100 posters through an open call. Since this competition’s inception ten years ago, four rounds have taken place, with 400 winning entries selected from over 7,400 submissions across 23 countries. The results of the latest round are currently being showcased in Qatar for the first time.
This year, the jury panel features artist Nora Aly; Lina Ghaibah, an educator, comics and animation artist; designer and artist Nassim Azarzar; type designer and artist Ali Almasri; and designer and researcher Ghalia Elsrakbi. The Co-Directors of 100/100 are Jochen Braun, Ryan Vincente Lee Grees, and Regina Rammelt.
The notable posters on view at M7 cover a full range of themes, which include movie posters, exhibitions, events, poetry, alphabets, and calligraphy. Together, they embody a vibrant cross-section of graphic innovation in the Arab-speaking world, demonstrating contemporary reinterpretations of script, image, and style.
