The Kanvas art space in Dubai is thrilled to present Brèche, a large-scale immersive installation by French artist Sébastien Labrunie. This breathtaking audiovisual work offers an organic exploration of matter, light, and memory, unfolding as a 30-day photogrammetric journal of 3D scans from real life. It blurs the boundaries between macro and micro perspectives, connecting moments and places from the past. The installation will be on display until 17 October 2024.
Brèche is a meditative and personal piece that Labrunie crafted using materials from his daily life to create sensitive, evocative landscapes. To sculpt light and shapes, the artist blended his experience in video game and VR technologies with both analogue and digital glitch art. As the 3D collage sequences of the installation expand, viewers are slowly pulled toward the heart of the “breach” where matter and memory dissolve into pulses of primal energy.

The sound design, a crucial component of the installation, was developed by Labrunie together with Taiwanese sound artist Lu Yi. Employing a cinematic approach, the artists merged cinematic drones with noise music, resulting in a powerful and vibrant auditory experience.
About the artist
Sébastien Labrunie (b. 1982) is a multidisciplinary artist and creative director with a background in graphic design and VR. His body of work spans immersive installations, 360° full-dome films, and experimental VR experiences; his practice also involves audiovisual live performances. Crafting loops and glitches connections between analogue and digital realms, Labrunie creates sensory experiences that examine human perception through organic textures and light.
Labrunie’s practice is driven by a deep curiosity about science, spirituality, and history. He works with Harvard-FAS CAMLab, an experimental initiative within Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences which explores innovative methods for showcasing art and culture through immersive installations, exhibitions, films, and other multimedia forms. Collaborating with CAMLab, Labrunie helps preserve digitally endangered archaeological sites around the world through photogrammetry 3D scanning.

The artist has participated in a number of exhibitions and art events, including the HALO Fulldome Festival (Cité des Sciences et de l’industrie, Paris, France, 2023); BRIGHT FESTIVAL (Leipzig, Germany, 2022); Writing of Light Festival (Taichung Museum, Taiwan, 2020); and Asia Digital Art Exhibition (Beijing, China, 2019), to name a few. Labrunie has also won several awards, such as, for instance, the Audience Award at SATFEST 2022 Fulldome Festival (Montréal, Canada, 2022) and the Second Prize in I CUBE Immersive Contest (Fuzhou, China, 2021).
