The new exhibition General Behaviour, which takes place at the Cultural Foundation, showcases artworks by Emirati artist Farah Al Qasimi. The exhibition is open until September 20th, 2022.
Artist Farah Al Qasimi presents her vibrant photographic and video-based works created during the period of almost ten years, 2012 to 2021. The artworks are shown in a chronological order.
“I think what interests me most about photography is that it is defined by the filter of the person making the image,” says the artist.
Al Qasimi’s works are presented in four main sections: The World Is Sinking; Bodies and Spectre; May’s Blue Eye and Trompe L’oeil. Visitors will also see a screening of Farah Al Qasimi’s video works: Alone in a Crowd and Dream Soup.
The exhibition General Behaviour analyzes the layers of multi-culturalism and consumer culture in the UAE, as well as challenges our understanding of reality, navigating the intimacy of public and personal spaces. The colour-saturated photographs show the often-unspoken social norms, invisible barriers, and value structures in various cultures, especially in the Persian Gulf.
Emirati artist and musician Farah Al Qasimi was born in Dubai in 1991. She is best known for her photographs of life in the Persian Gulf. In 2018, after attending Yale University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree and an MFA, she moved to New York City. During the past years, her art has moved between private and public spaces; however, the content is primarily aimed at capturing the fantastic in everyday life. Also, the artist investigates how consumer culture seduces people, especially women, promising beauty and self-improvement.
In her colour-saturated images Al Qasimi manages to capture the fantastic in mundane life and push spectators to reconsider their understanding of reality, deepening their interpretation of symbols and meanings.
The Cultural Foundation was created by Sheik Zayed in 1981. It was reopened in 2018 presenting contemporary culture and cultural exchange to the visitors.
