Until 29 April 2026, The Warehouse is hosting Born from the Light, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Kristel Bechara. Bringing together recent paintings and digital works, the presentation reflects the artist’s long-standing interest in mythology, feminine identity, and the expressive power of colour. Set within Dubai’s Al Quoz creative district, the exhibition offers visitors a broad view of how her work continues to evolve across both physical and virtual mediums.

The show is structured around two interconnected bodies of work: Starborn Archetypes and Heart of Chroma: Stories of Empowered Existence. Together, they reveal Bechara’s ability to move fluidly between acrylic painting and digitally produced imagery while maintaining a highly recognizable visual language. Her compositions often feature monochromatic figures or backgrounds animated by intricate bursts of pattern, radiant colour, and ornamental detail. This contrast between restraint and exuberance has become one of the defining signatures of her art.

In Starborn Archetypes, Bechara reimagines the twelve signs of the zodiac through the lens of Greek mythology. Each astrological sign is paired with a goddess whose symbolic qualities echo the emotional and psychological traits associated with that sign. The artist transforms the mythological figures into contemporary icons: strong, luminous, and psychologically complex. Decorative framing devices, celestial motifs, and richly layered surfaces give the series a dreamlike intensity.

The second collection of works, Heart of Chroma, foregrounds painting as a space for storytelling. Here, Bechara explores themes of resilience, liberation, and female experience through references to classical narratives and archetypal figures. Artworks reinterpret well-known myths from a contemporary perspective and grant women greater agency and presence than they have often been afforded in traditional visual culture. These paintings are emotionally direct yet highly stylized; they combine sensual surfaces with conceptual depth.

A central concern throughout the exhibition is the relationship between light and identity. The title, Born from the Light, suggests illumination as a metaphor for self-knowledge, creativity, and transformation. Many of the displayed art pieces seem to radiate from within, using vivid chromatic accents to imply inner force rather than external decoration. In this sense, colour becomes narrative: a language of confidence, emotion, and becoming.

Bechara’s artistic career is rooted in a multidisciplinary background. Before dedicating herself fully to fine art, she worked in graphic design. Traces of that training remain visible in her command of composition, line, and surface rhythm. Her paintings often possess the clarity and balance of designed images, yet they avoid rigidity through their sensuous textures and expressive energy. This fusion of graphic precision and painterly freedom gives her work a contemporary immediacy that resonates across audiences.

Bechara is renowned as an early adopter of NFT technology. She became one of the first established female artists from the region to integrate blockchain-based digital art into her practice. Rather than treating technology as separate from traditional artmaking, she approaches it as another medium through which ideas can be expressed.

Yet despite the technical range of her practice, Bechara’s practice remains deeply human in focus. Across painting, print, and digital formats, she repeatedly returns to questions of individuality, empowerment, and emotional presence. Her female figures are not passive muses but protagonists: self-possessed, introspective, and commanding. Through them, she constructs a symbolic universe where beauty is inseparable from strength.
