The Mine, an interdisciplinary art space and a curatorial initiative, presents O Chimera O Chimera, a solo show by Iranian artist Bita Fayyazi that displays a collection of her sculptures. Fayyazi’s artworks resonate with dramatic intensity and often evoke the female form. Through them, she transforms the body into a powerful site of resistance and renewal that navigates transformation with resilience. One will be able to admire her art pieces until 21 April 2025.

While grounded in the human figure, Fayyazi’s practice frequently slips into hybridity, melding species, blurring myth with matter. These totemic, otherworldly creatures feel both intimate and uncanny, reflecting our entangled relationship with the animal realm. In these composite forms, the artist carves out a space where memory, myth, and material converge: a place where the fantastical becomes a tool for reimagining the real. Her work unravels the boundaries between gender, identity, form, and environment.

About the artist

Bita Fayyazi (b. 1962, Tehran, Iran) is a Tehran-based sculptor, ceramicist, and installation artist. Between 1975 and 1982, she lived and studied in the UK, and upon returning to Iran, she honed her skills in ceramics and pottery at the Cultural Heritage Organisation and local porcelain workshops. Over time, her practice expanded to include sculpting with mud and plaster.

Fayyazi is widely regarded as one of Tehran’s most influential contemporary artists. Her work is collaborative, process-oriented, and performative, often created in dialogue with artists and individuals beyond the traditional art world. For Fayyazi, the final artwork is secondary to the communal process of creation: a celebration of shared labour, experimentation, and the joy of making. Through these exchanges, she challenges conventional ideas of authorship and investigates the transformative power of collective creativity.

Fayyazi has displayed her work in numerous exhibitions and major art events, such as Art Dubai (2021); 9th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (Icheon, South Korea, 2017); Rearranged: Selected Works from 1998 to 2014 (solo) (Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, Dubai, 2014); Naqsh – An Insight into Gender and Role Models in Iran (Pergamon Museum, Berlin, Germany, 2008); the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); 6th Biennale of Contemporary Ceramic Art (Museum of Contemporary Art, Tehran, 1998), where she became one of three special award winners; and others.
