The Sharjah Museums Authority has organised Letters Exchanged, an exhibition showcasing a collection of letters exchanged between Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi, his family, friends, and acquaintances. Hosted at the Bait Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi Museum, the exhibition was opened by Sheikh Haitham bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Deputy Head of the Office of H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah in Kalba, and will end on 31 December 2024.

These handwritten letters, delivered by messengers, offer profound insights into the social and political dynamics of the era. They reflect the cultural and social fabric of Sheikh Saeed’s time while emphasizing themes of familial connection, mutual respect, and care.

Notable exhibits include an emotional letter from Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad bin Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Ruler of Kalba, to his daughter Sheikha Aisha bint Saeed and another to his cousin, Shaikha bint Saif Al Abdouli. Also on display is a letter from Latifa bint Ali bin Darwesh, Sheikh Saeed’s mother, to her granddaughter Aisha bint Saeed, expressing her joy at the birth of her great-grandchild and underscoring the strong familial ties.

The exhibited letters, which are carefully reproduced to preserve the originals, have been graciously shared by the Bin Darwesh family through Mr. Abdulaziz bin Darwesh. This personal correspondence forms part of a collection maintained by the Sharjah Museums Authority, offering one a unique glimpse into the intimate relationships and cultural heritage of Sharjah’s past.

In addition, the exhibition presents an array of historical objects such as women’s costumes, personal adornments, and household items, enriching the narrative and providing a holistic view of the era.

About the Bait Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi Museum

Situated in Kalba, the museum was built between 1899 and 1901 as a beachfront residence of Sheikh Saeed and his family. The building exemplifies traditional Emirati architecture, featuring wind towers, open courtyards, and distinct design elements. The structure comprises two sections separated by a wall. The eastern side includes the entrance, Al Majlis, Morabba’a, and privacy curtains with Mazaqhel, a drapery design that preserves privacy while allowing glimpses of the outdoors. The outer Majlis, overlooking the shore, was reserved for men and visitors. The western side housed family living quarters.

Converted into a museum in 1999, the site invites visitors to explore the rich culture and history of the region. Exhibits include photographs, artefacts, and pottery, alongside dedicated sections such as Sheikh Saeed’s room, children’s rooms, and an area showcasing agricultural tools. Two rooms display collections of metalwork, glass, and pottery, while another section is dedicated to archaeological finds from Sharjah’s Eastern Region.
