Zambian artist Victor Sitali invites everyone to have a look at his bright paintings which pay tribute to vibrant African culture. His solo exhibition staged at the Le Meridien Fairway Hotel in Dubai will run through 31 August 2023.
The show features the paintings from the artist’s latest series titled African Hues and takes one on a journey through the rich heritage and artistic expression of Africa. Visitors get an opportunity to admire the beauty of traditional and contemporary African art and explore the interplay of colours, forms, and narratives which define Sitali’s art talents. Each of the exhibited art pieces was carefully selected by the artist himself. “This collection is really close to my heart as I take great inspiration from the colourful nature of Africa’s vegetation and the beautiful colours of African fabrics in […] Zambia,” he said. Among the key themes in the series is chitenge which is a popular garment in Africa. It is a piece of colourful patterned fabric mostly worn by women.
About the artist
Victor Sitali (b. 1990, Zambia) is an artist, freelance photographer, and designer residing in Dubai since 2006. Sitali obtained his BA degree in Graphic Design from the SAE Institute Dubai in 2017. From 2011 to 2014, he attended Mawaheb from Beautiful People, a creative space for people of determination. It was that place where Sitali, who has been hearing impaired since he was 3, discovered a way to express himself through painting. In 2012, he went to the UK, where he took lessons from Trevor Waugh, an internationally famous British artist.
Sitali’s artworks have been displayed in such exhibitions as Afro at Art Hub (Abu Dhabi, 2018); Okongola at Create Hub Gallery (Dubai, 2017); Spoken Art at Art Couture (Dubai, 2013); Confluence: A Journey Within at Bozana Milic Gallery (Zutphen, Holland, 2012); and others. In 2013 Sitali was granted Best Artist and Highly Recommended awards at the 1st Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival. He was also mentioned among 1700 artists at the International Emerging Artists Award 2012/13.
Victor Sitali’s artistic practice involves using oil and acrylic paints, watercolours, pastel, and charcoal. Most of his paintings are figurative. However, he also produces abstract art pieces in which he tries to share the sounds of his world on canvas: the silent noise.
Apart from making art in his studio, Sitali holds oil painting and charcoal workshops as well as workshops on sign language in schools, art venues, and art events across the Emirates.
