The Louvre Abu Dhabi museum and Richard Mille, a Swiss luxury watch brand, announced the jury members for the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2023 exhibition and The Richard Mille Art Prize. Supporting regional artists, these art events serve as a platform for them to showcase their talent.
The jury panel of the 3d iteration of the exhibition, which will be held in November, comprises experts from various artistic fields. These are:
- HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a founder and chairman of UAE Unlimited, an open exhibition platform. A passionate collector of modern and contemporary art from the Middle East and South Asia, HH Sheikh Zayed is a patron of the Centre Pompidou in France, the British Museum, and the Sharjah Art Foundation.
- Dr Souraya Noujaim, the Islamic Arts Department’s director (Musée du Louvre, France) and a former director for Scientific, Curatorial, and Collections Management (Louvre Abu Dhabi).
- Maya El Khalil, an independent curator and art advisor. From 2009 to 2016, she was a founding director of Athr Gallery (Jeddah). It is El Khalil who curates Art Here 2023.
- Clare Lilley, a British curator and Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s director who has curated the annual Frieze Sculpture in London’s Regent’s Park from 2012 to 2022. Lilley is also a trustee of Art UK (London), the George Rickey Foundation (New York), and the Jupiter Artland Foundation (Edinburgh).
- Guilhem André, a museum professional, archaeologist, art historian, and acting director for Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management (Louvre Abu Dhabi).
- Mohammed Kazem, a famous Emirati artist who works in Dubai. His art practice involves photography, the use of found objects and video, sound, and performance art. Kazem was shortlisted for the Art Here in 2021.
The theme of this year’s Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here is Transparencies. Art practitioners were offered to propose their art pieces exploring the dynamics of transparency and its material and perceptual significance. The exhibition will take place under the museum’s majestic dome full of light and shade playing with each other. So according to Maya El Khalil, the show’s theme was inspired by the space itself, which has a particular atmosphere created by the mesmerising interplay of “the structural perforations, light, shadow, water, and courtyards.”
The deadline for submissions to the Art Here exhibition and the Richard Mille Art Prize was in July 2023. The participant who wins this year’s Richard Mille Art Prize will receive more than AED 220,000.
