Zawyeh Gallery presents Gaza: Recalling the Collage of a Place, an online solo exhibition by multidisciplinary Gazan artist Tayseer Barakat. This exhibition showcases his decade-long series of artworks that delve deep into the intricate history and cultural richness of Gaza. One will be able to see the artist’s evocative pieces, which offer a powerful narrative of resilience, memory, and heritage, until 15 September 2024.
Tayseer Barakat draws inspiration from historical manuscripts, his childhood memories, and the cultural heritage of Gaza, particularly from the Jabalia camp where he was born. As Gaza’s cultural fabric endures relentless challenges, Barakat’s abstract works often created using collage, diverse printing techniques, inks, and dyes serve as poignant reflections on the region’s rich tapestry amidst the ongoing crisis.
“These [pieces] are more than mere images; they are visual chronicles of a place and its people,” Ziad Anani, Director of Zawyeh Gallery, said. “Barakat’s use of collage and symbolism creates a mosaic of social landscapes and historical echoes, bridging the past with present […].”
About the artist
Tayseer Barakat (b. 1959, Gaza), who resides in Ramallah (Palestina), obtained his BA in Painting from the College of Fine Arts (Helwan University, Alexandria, Egypt) in 1983. After that, he came back to Ramallah to work as an art teacher while continuing to create his own art. Barakat is a co-founder of several significant art institutions, including the Al-Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem, Al-Hallaj Hall in Ramallah, the Palestinian Association for Contemporary Art (PACA), and the International Academy of Arts in Palestine.
Barakat’s artistic practice spans a range of materials, including wood, metal, glass, and various paints, with a particular focus on painting and wood burning. His works often feature a muted colour palette, reflecting the harsh realities of life in his homeland. Rich with figures, symbols, and motifs inspired by ancient cultures that once flourished in Palestine, such as the Assyrians, Canaanites, and Philistines, Barakat’s art is a deep exploration of the region’s historical and cultural legacy.
The artist has exhibited his creations in solo and group shows across the world, such as the 7th Beijing International Art Biennale (2017); Masters of Palestinian Art, season I, International Art Colony (Budapest, Hungary, 2016); and Dust, Dialogue and Iron, which won the Alexandria Biennial Prize (2010). Barakat’s art pieces are part of several collections: the Birzeit University Collection (Ramallah), Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (Amman, Jordan), Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah), and Guggenheim (New York, USA).
