The Voyager is the Narrator exhibition displays art pieces by the creatives who participated in the Fire Station’s international residency programme across Paris and New York. This showcase includes pieces by four artists who engaged in New York Residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme (ISCP) (Almaha Nasser, Saida Alkhulaifi, Zainab Alshibani, and Wadha Almusallam aka WDHA), alongside works by five participants of the Paris Residency at Cité Internationale des Arts (Ibrahim Albaker, Voyyyd, Fatima Ahmed, Lolwa Almeghaiseb, and Maryam AlTajer). On view at Fire Station, the show will be open to the public until the 20th of April, 2024. Working hours are 9 AM to 7 PM (Saturday-Thursday) and 1:30 PM to 7 PM on Fridays.

Within the exhibition, each artist shares their unique narrative through a series of works inspired by their respective journeys. It could be the city, nature, social life, solitude, diversity of resources, or simply a passing person that enriched their experience and profoundly influenced their artistic endeavours.

For instance, graphic designer and artist Zainab AlShibani displays her art piece To Be Read, a collection of printed works made in the form of an art book. Fatima Ahmed presents her photo project focusing on a humanitarian story of individuals with albinism in Tanzania, exploring how they are often marginalised and become victims of witchcraft and superstitious beliefs. Visitors can also see Saida AlKhulaifi’s evocative images of silent landscapes that subtly preserve human connections, where she took photo prints of the Al Baidaa empty desert.

About the Fire Station: Artist in Residence

This artist residency programme is dedicated to nurturing, energising, and promoting the art and creative community in Qatar. The programme grants emerging artists production support, expert mentorships, and access to studio facilities, thus serving as a springboard for their artistic growth. Culminating in an exhibition at the Garage Gallery, participating artists have the opportunity to showcase their creations to the public.

A huge success, the Artist in Residence programme has expanded its duration to include three months at the Cite Internationale des Art in Paris and in New York City at Studio 209 NY, part of ISCP. This residency programme empowers young artists to share their talent on a global stage and provides them with an immersive experience within the vibrant art scenes of New York and Paris. Besides, the artist gets a chance to engage with the international art community, explore various cultural perspectives, and develop their creative practice.
