Engraving and Printing Course at Sharjah Art Institute

Sharjah Art Foundation is glad to present a new course, Engraving and Printing, for youth and adults which will take place at Sharjah Art Institute. The course will last for approximately 2 months (May 9th – June 30th, 2022) from Mondays to Thursdays. The available times are: 9:00 am–1:00 pm or 4:00 pm–8:00 pm.

Engraving is a kind of graphic art and printing technology based on the engraving of a printed form. The image in the art of engraving is obtained as a result of an impression on paper (in a mirror form) from a printing form – “boards” made of metal (copper, steel, iron, zinc), wood (woodcut) or linoleum (linocut) and even cardboard (engraving on cardboard) or glass (fluorofort) with an in-depth (engraved) pattern applied to such a form (in printing – a matrix).

There will be three levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced, from which you can choose.

The Beginner course is an introduction to engraving, printing and graphic design. The students will be offered to analyse and work with two-dimensional surfaces using symbols, lines, visual vocabulary and geometric shapes. These aesthetic values and graphic elements will be used to design surfaces in an artistic way. Information about the multiple gradations of the colour grey from white to black and an application of colour distribution methods to artworks using various techniques, such as shading, hatching and dotting, will also be presented.

The Intermediate course  offers information about different engraving and printing techniques, from monoprinting to collagraph. A the end of the course, students will understand the differences between single and duplicate prints and between coloured prints and monoprints. Also, stuents will be provided with new materials such as wood or linoleum to work with.

On the Advanced course, students will learn the techniques for coloured linoleum printing, flat silkscreen printing and metal embossing. At the end of the course, artworks by combining various techniques will be created.

The registration fee for any of the courses is AED 500. For more information about the courses at Sharjah Art Institute, please send an email to institute@sharjahart.org and visit Sharjah Institute of arts
