Until 12 April 2026, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is hosting Cultural Landscapes of Al-Andalus, an exhibition organised by the Sharjah Museums Authority in partnership with Spain’s Islamic Culture Foundation. The show explores the environmental and cultural heritage of the historic territories of Al-Andalus, the Muslim-ruled regions of the Iberian Peninsula between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. The exhibition traces how landscapes shaped daily life, scientific knowledge, and imagination in one of the most influential civilisations of the medieval Mediterranean.

With more than sixty historical artefacts, many exhibited in Sharjah for the first time, the show reveals how human ingenuity transformed the natural environment of Al-Andalus into fertile agricultural lands and spaces of beauty and contemplation. Through models, images, and material culture, it highlights the sophisticated irrigation systems, agricultural techniques, and artisanal industries that supported thriving urban and rural communities.

The exhibition comprises two thematic sections that reveal the multiple dimensions of Andalusi landscapes. The first, Gardens of Delight, focuses on the garden as both a cultivated and symbolic space. In Al-Andalus, gardens were more than places of leisure: they functioned as sites of botanical experimentation, poetic inspiration, and philosophical reflection. Carefully designed with flowing water, geometric layouts, and diverse plant life, these environments embodied a vision of harmony between nature and human design.

The second section, The Good Land, turns to the broader productive landscapes of Al-Andalus. Here, the exhibition highlights the sophisticated irrigation systems, agricultural techniques, and artisanal practices that transformed the Iberian landscape into a network of fertile fields, orchards, and thriving settlements. Through these innovations, communities developed a deep understanding of water management, soil cultivation, and ecological balance, knowledge that would influence agricultural practices far beyond the region.

Together, these narratives reveal how the landscapes of Al-Andalus were shaped by a dynamic interplay between nature, knowledge, and culture. By reconstructing the agricultural and ecological foundations of Andalusi society, the exhibition spotlights the ingenuity and environmental awareness that underpinned this historic civilisation, while also illuminating its enduring influence on architecture, horticulture, and cultural thought across the Mediterranean world.
