Volery Gallery presents Serendipity, a mesmerising exhibition by Chinese-born artist Yuyu Zhitong, which marks her debut solo presentation in the Middle East. Running through 11 February 2026, the show invites audiences into the artist’s rich and intuitive pictorial world.

In Serendipity, Zhitong unfolds a compelling visual language rooted in abstraction and expressive mark-making. With her background in Chinese dance informing the physicality of her work, Zhitong’s recent paintings explore the dynamic interplay between intuition and reason, balancing emotive spontaneity with formal enquiry. Through rhythmic gestures, vibrant hues, and layered compositions, the artworks create an immersive experience that encourages viewers to reflect on chance encounters, emotional resonance, and the poetic logic that underpins her artistic thought.

Zhitong’s practice is grounded in gestural mark-making and marked by psychological depth and subtle visual tension. Her aesthetic sensibility is informed by the cultural vibrancy of Asia in the 1980s and 1990s, a period shaped by sentimentality, nostalgia, introspection, and a growing sense of liberation from conservative frameworks. Constantly challenging established modes of thought, emotion, and perception, Zhitong experiments with contrasting methods and juxtapositions of extremes to expand the expressive potential of her work. A recurring feature of her practice is the interplay between whimsical mystery and childlike influence, lending her paintings both emotional resonance and imaginative openness.
