SAF summer art school Week 3 starts. It includes two workshops for Children and Families. The languages spoken are English and Arabic. All materials needed will be provided by Sharjah Art Foundation. Both events will be held at Gallery 4, Al Mureijah Art Spaces, and will last from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

On the 31st of July, 2022, the Introduction to calligraphy workshop, designed for children aged from 11 to 15, will take place.  An introduction to the history of calligraphy and its development will be made. Participants will see some examples of calligraphy works,  types of ornamentations and techniques used by artists in calligraphic works.

On the 2nd of August, the workshop will continue with colour techniques in Arabic letters. In this second calligraphy session, participants will find out about other applied arts related to calligraphy, for example, writing letters with colours.

The word calligraphy comes from the Greek words kalós (beautifully) and grafí (I write). It is a type of fine art, the essence of which is a special emotional embellishment of written signs  such as letters or hieroglyphs. The functions of drawing and writing are combined in calligraphy. It is a means of artistic expression of the artists and a way of accessible display of text information at the same time.

It originated with the invention of writing more than five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, on the territory of modern Iraq. From there, the art of beautiful writing spread to other regions.

Sharjah Art Foundation aims at making it possible for anyone with special needs to attend these events. Please, contact the Sharjah Art Foundation in advance to arrange any support needed during this session.
