On the 2nd of July, 2022, Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) presents a meeting of their book club with the attention on the fantasy genre. This meetup is great for youth (12+) and adults. The meeting point is The Flying Saucer, Dasman. The visitors are welcome to arrive at 4 pm and the Book Club will take place until 7 pm. Languages spoken are English and Arabic. The event is free.

At SAF Book Club meeting, bestselling novels in the genre of fantasy such as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy War trilogy and V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic Trilogy, will be discussed.

Fantasy includes books in which the action takes place in other worlds often during the Middle Ages, or in our world, in which there are fantastic elements: magic, divine or supernatural forces.

The authors draw detailed maps, think over the biography of the characters for several generations back, carefully document the history, myths and legends of the races and peoples inhabiting their world, even create fictional languages.

The Flying Saucer in Sharjah is a 1978 building constructed in Brutalist style. It originally housed various businesses, such as a café, restaurant, newsstand, gift shop and pharmacy. However, It has been restored by Sharjah Art Foundation and is now open to the public as a multi-purpose cultural hub for the community.

The Flying Saucer building features an open-air courtyard full of vegetation, a multi-activity café, a curated library, and several “pods”. All these spaces host a range of cultural and exhibition programmes and activities including film screenings, workshops, performances, readings, convenings, hands-on activities.
