On the 25th of September, 2022, everyone is welcome to take part in one of the Jameel Library Reading Groups sessions. The session will take place at Jameel Library. It will start at 11:00 am and end at 1:00 pm. The language spoken is Arabic. The event is free and open to the public, although please note that registration is required.
Jameel Library Reading Groups continue to focus on the Eco/Sci/Fi topic. In these group reading meetings, participants immerse themselves in science fiction writing which explores themes within and around ecology. Each session is led by a different curator, who fosters a discussion around sustainability, environmental issues and technology within possible futures.
In the session on September 25, participants will be reading excerpts from The Incredible Tide by Alexander Key translated into Arabic by Merna Al Rasheed. At the center of the narrative there is Conan, a boy living alone on a small island on Earth after World War III. The world got knocked off its axis and the continents have sunk into the ocean; only small islets remain. Conan is rescued, but he realises that the new society differs from the world he knew before very much.
Participants will also be watching corresponding excerpts from its anime adaptation by Hayao Miyazaki ‘Future Boy Conan’. The curator of the session is Husam Hilali.
About the curator:
Husam Hilali is a Sudanese writer who lives in Dubai. Hiali has worked as a journalist, news correspondent in addition to working in theatre and television as a writer and producer. He has published two collections of short stories. His unpublished book of poetry received the Osama Danasory Award for Poetry in 2018.
