From the 11th of March till the 20th of September, 2022, you’ve got an opportunity to visit a unique exhibition called “Another Perspective” at Cultural Foundation. Within the exhibition, visitors can enjoy the beautiful artworks by the artist Mohamed Al Astad.
Creating his dramatic visual pieces, Mohamed Al Astad uses a one-of-a-kind technique “The Art of Beach Pearls” (Danat Al Shawati). No traditional art mediums are involved: what the artist works with is sea sand, iron filings, rust and time. Thus, the created artworks strengthen the relationship between the nature and the human being.
Mohamed Al Astad was born into a coastal Al Hammadi tribe of Khor Fakkan. Growing up amid the beaches obviously affected the things he dedicates his art to and the way he expresses it. “[The idea of the ‘beach tombs’] allows me to explore my connection to the coast and gives me an infinite context in which to work”, says the artist. “I am free from any restrictions […]. Instead of a brush, I have a shovel; instead of a studio, I have a beach.”
Mohamed Al Astad has participated in more than 300 group exhibitions and 20 solo shows nationally, regionally, and internationally. His works are included in a number of collections such as that of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and the late Princess Diana. Besides, he founded a creativity centre, which, for four years, provided courses in a range of techniques in visual art, design and photography. It became the first place of its kind in Abu Dhabi.
