Until the 17th of August, 2024, the Fire Station art space in Doha (Qatar) is displaying Etheralscape, a free exhibition by artificial intelligence artist Dr AlKhuzama AlHarami and French sound artist Guillaume Rouseré, who resides in Qatar. The show held at Artist in Residence’s Gallery 3 presents their collaborative piece Etheralscape that explores the interaction between nature and modern society.

Etheralscape is an immersive installation that harmoniously blends image and sound, offering an exciting sensory experience. Once in the exhibiting space, video projections depicting desert landscapes and calligraphy captivate your attention. The visuals are paired with soundscapes drawn from desert field recordings and other evocative sounds. Providing a meditative escape, the installation invites viewers to relax and take a break from the noise and stress of daily life.

About the artists

In her work, Dr AlKhuzama AlHarami, who holds a PhD in Computer Engineering, blurs the boundaries between AI and artistic expression. Her dynamic and immersive artworks reflect her personal experiences in a way that allows the viewer to be part of the piece. Dr AlKhuzama AlHarami is an artist-in-residence at the Fire Station (2023-2024).

Employing sound, Guillaume Rouseré (b. 1977, France) examines the intersections of nature, culture, and history. His oeuvre encompasses sound sculptures, immersive installations, and sound compositions. Rouseré draws heavily from eco-acoustics, focusing on the relationship between sound and the environment. His work is also influenced by phenomenology, exploring the subjective experience of sound. Rouseré was an artist-in-residence (2018-2019) at the Fire Station. During that period, he created a collection of sound installations inspired by dhows and also produced the Sound Fossil Sculptures series. The artist was also an alumni-in-residence (2021) at the Fire Station.

One of Rouseré’s renowned creations is “Allow Me…” (2020), a public artwork commissioned by Qatar Museum Authorities and Qatar Rail to commemorate the 3rd year anniversary of the blockade of Qatar. This fossil-like sculpture crafted from limestone can be found in the Msheireb central metro station in Doha. Rouseré’s other notable piece is The World as We Know It is Changing (2022), an immersive sound installation at Mathaf, Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. This work, which features personal field recordings and live cymatics projections, focuses on the struggle to preserve nature in an urbanising world and draws viewers’ attention to the fragility of freshwater resources.
