On the 12th of May, 2022, Alserkal Arts Foundation invites visitors to attend the screening of Mechanical Love, a documentary by Danish filmmaker Phie Ambo, and its following discussion, which will be led by Iram Ghufran, an award-winning filmmaker, educator and researcher.
Mechanical Love is a film about the interrelationship between robots and humans. Filmed in Japan, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the U.S.A, the film demonstrates the incredible worldwide advances in robot technology, the changes in human-robots relationships, the social advantages and dangers and the human need for love and a desire to be loved by others. Phie Ambo investigates the cultural differences in how people perceive emotional robots in the East and the West.
Filmmaker Phie Ambo was trained at the National Film School of Denmark. She is famous for her feature-length documentary films full of poetic, personal and cinematic language. The topics she analyses in her films are family relations, love, creative processes, and artificial life. Phie Ambo has directed several award-winning films such as Family (2001) and Gambler (2005). In recent years, Ambo has been especially interested in the relation between science and human existence.
The screening will be the first one in a series of screenings and discussions led by Iram Ghufran. Her work deals with speculative modes of storytelling and her interests lie in techno spectral forms, nonhuman agency, micro-practices of futurity and mythopoesis. Iram’s work has been shown in several international art and cinematic contexts. The Delhi based filmmaker was in residence at Alserkal Arts Foundation in spring 2022. This programme is a continuation of conversations developed through her research.
The screening starts at 6:30 pm. It will be followed by a discussion which will last until 9 pm. The event will take place at Common Room, Warehouse 51, at Alserkal Arts Foundation.
