Fabienne Verdier, a famous contemporary abstract painter, is presenting a remarkable series of paintings, Voyage d’Hiver, at Custot Gallery Dubai.

It is a series of 8 paintings made using traditions and techniques from both the east and west.  They were created by the artist after listening to Die Winterreise (Voyage d’Hiver) by classical Austrian composer Franz Schubert. This ensemble of 24 lieder written for piano and voice in 1827, one year before the death of Schubert, brings to the artist, in each listen, immense vibrations. Thus, this series of paintings shows the fading scale and vibrations using energetic strokes.

Fabienne Verdier usually paints vertically, standing directly on her stretchers, with the use of a giant brush and specially crafted tools that are suspended from the ceiling of her studio. Her work has been exhibited across the world. Fabienne Verdier’s art combines Eastern aspects of unity, spontaneity and asceticism with the line, action and expression of Western painting.

“I can’t help myself, while listening to the internal dialogue between the poet and the piano, to think of the mysterious and captivating painting of Caspar David Friedrich, painted in 1818, ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’,” says Fabienne Verdier, “We can perceive in the melodies of Schubert a journey which intertwines, juxtaposes, tangles, and interlaces horizons, shingles, pathways, undergrowth, hills, valleys, and interior landscapes. In face of the sea or of the desert the traveller lets himself be carried away by the wind that sculpts the movement of the waves and the dunes, in infinite transformations.”

Custot Gallery Dubai, founded by Stéphane Custot, opened in March 2016 in the heart of Alserkal Avenue, the city’s hub for arts. The gallery showcases modern and contemporary artists such as Josef Albers, Chu Teh-Chun, Ian Davenport and others.
