Art Dubai is a global platform that showcases the diversity and innovation of contemporary art. With each edition, it brings together renowned galleries, visionary artists, and art enthusiasts from around the world.
Art Dubai announced the curators for the upcoming 17th edition, which will take place from 1 to 3 March 2024 (with preview days on 28 and 29 February).
Art Dubai’s Artistic Director, Pablo del Val, has announced the curators for next year’s fair. As part of the fair’s ongoing efforts to expand the boundaries of contemporary art and redefine art-historical concepts through a modern lens, independent curators will be collaborating on specific sections of the event.
At Art Dubai, curators place a strong emphasis on showcasing art from the Global South, an underrepresented geographical area, that reflects the rapidly changing city of Dubai. As a platform dedicated to highlighting work from this region, Art Dubai has a unique opportunity to present, question, and redefine the concept of the “Global South”. Art Dubai provides artists and galleries with a platform to explore this idea and how it continues to evolve.
The Bawwaba section at Art Dubai showcases solo exhibitions by artists from the Global South and artwork created specifically for the event in the past 12 months. The name “Bawwaba” means gateway in Arabic. The fifth edition of this section will be curated by Emiliano Valdés, Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Medellin, Columbia. The exhibition will focus on artists who explore the concept of healing on personal, social, and political levels.
Dr. Christianna Bonin, an Assistant Professor of Art History at the American University of Sharjah, will curate Art Dubai Modern. This segment of the event aims to delve into the cultural dynamics of a broader geographic region that contributed to the Global South of today. The post-1940s geopolitical landscape introduced a new paradigm for connections among artists, musicians, architects, and filmmakers from the region, resulting in interwoven cultural links between the East and South highlighted in this section.
The third edition of Art Dubai Digital, curated by Auronda Scalera and Alfredo Cramerotti, co-directors of IAM-Infinity Art Museum, will focus on emerging trends in digital arts, AI, AR, VR, and NFTs. The curators will present this section with a view to advanced technologies, exploring the potential ways these mediums could shape the future of art and its perception.
These three sections, alongside Art Dubai Contemporary, will offer visitors to Art Dubai new readings of the past, present and future of artistic production.
