Gallery Isabelle in Dubai is hosting Rumors from the Skies, a solo exhibition by French-Algerian artist Abdelkader Benchamma, known for his intricate drawings and wall installations that probe the intersections of science, mysticism, and natural phenomena. On view until 2 November 2025, the exhibition continues his exploration of the invisible structures that govern the physical and metaphysical worlds.
The displayed artworks are inspired by Kometenbuch (“The Comet Book”), a 16th-century Flemish manuscript that catalogued celestial events, such as comets and other atmospheric phenomena. Benchamma reimagines the heavens as a realm where astronomy, mythology, and superstition overlap. Executed in fine ink lines and delicate shading, his compositions depict meteorites, shooting stars, and other enigmatic forms suspended between sky and earth.

The show combines finely detailed drawings with an immersive, large-scale mural and a projected animation that together create a threshold between the material and the imagined. Visitors are invited to move through spaces where cosmic imagery appears to dissolve into organic forms, suggesting a universe in constant flux. Through this interplay of precision and abstraction, Benchamma reflects on how human beings have long sought to interpret the unknown, not only through scientific observation and measurement but also through story, myth, and dream.
About the artist
Abdelkader Benchamma (b. 1975, Mazamet, France) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and now lives and works between Paris and Montpellier. Taking cues from classical draftsmanship, scientific modelling, comics, Japanese prints, and literature, he creates highly sophisticated works that contemplate the states of matter and the relationship between humans and their physical and metaphysical surroundings. His practice expands the medium of drawing beyond the page. It transforms walls and entire spaces into immersive, cosmic environments where viewers find themselves enveloped in dynamic, otherworldly forms.

Benchamma has displayed his works in many exhibitions and art events, including Islamic Arts Biennale, The Second Edition (Jeddah, KSA, 2025); Prix Marcel Duchamp 2024 (Centre Pompidou, Paris); Solastalgia (solo), Archeologies of Loss (The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada, 2023); Syncopation: Contemporary encounters with the Modern Masters (The Pola Museum of Art, Japan, 2019); and The Future of a Promise, 54th Venice Biennale (Italy, 2011), among others.

Benchamma has received several accolades, which include being nominated for Prix Marcel Duchamp (Paris, 2024) and becoming a Winner of the Occitanie-Médicis Prize (France, 2018). His artworks are part of major public collections, such as Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Doha, Qatar), Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans (Orléans, France), and Barjeel Foundation (Sharjah).
